Do-It-Yourself Gift Tips for the Gardener Dad!

Author: Alaina Salks

#1 Spend time with Dad in the Garden
Many gardeners love nothing more than spending a sunny day in their garden watering, weeding and planting. If your father is that type of gardener, spend this Father's Day working with him in the garden! Whether you water and fertilize his plants, weed the garden or edge his beds, your dad will appreciate the quality time you spend together in his favorite place!

#2 Kids Garden Coupons
Help dad out by offering to perform some of his regular household duties for free! Here are two sample coupons that you can use to present your dad with the gift of a hard days work. He'll be so glad that you've relieved him of a few of his garden chores.

#3 Put Together a Father's Day Pruning Kit
Surprise dad this father's day with a new pair of gardening pruners or shears and a kit to keep them clean! To create a festive pruning kit, place the new pruners in a gardening pail along with the essential cleaning accessories: isopropyl alcohol, scouring pads, rags and cotton swabs.

#4 Home Made Bug Spray
Keep dad from getting bitten this gardening season with your home made Father's Day bug spray! To make this bug spray, start by filling a spray bottle with either witch hazel or a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. Add a few drops of citronella, lavender, peppermint or tea tree oil. Shake the mixture and spray it on!

#5 Make Your Own Garden Stepping Stone
Personalize a stepping stone for dad to put into his garden - he'll think of you every time he plants his tomatoes!

To make this stone you'll need ..
Concrete
Disposable pie pan
  also...
Heavy duty Scissors
A file or very coarse sandpaper
Eye protection
Decorations for the surface of the stone ..
broken pottery
glass marbles
sea shells
mosaic tiles
river rocks, etc.

1. Set up in an outdoor area on a flat surface. 2. Mix the concrete according to the manufacturers directions. 3. Fill the disposable pie pan leaving 1/2 inch of space at the top. Let the concrete sit until it has a slightly gummy or tacky texture. 4. Once the concrete is gummy you can begin to add your decorations. Push the decorations far enough into the concrete so that they are set but not covered. Kids can put their hand prints into the concrete or you can paint the top of the tile after it has set. 5. Let the stone dry overnight. 6. Remove the stone from the pan one it is dry. If it does not easily slide out of the pan you may need to use your heavy duty scissors to cut the disposable pie pan off of the stone. 7. Use the file to smooth any sharp or ruff parts around the edge of the stone.

Congratulations! You're ready to give dad his father's day stepping stone! Once he's decided where he wants to put the stepping stone you can help him by digging a shallow hole for the stone. To do this you will use a shovel to cut a circle in the ground the size of the stone. You will then remove 1/2 - 1 inch of soil from the circle, keeping it level on the bottom. You can then place the stone in the circle and it will be "dug in" to your garden - half of the stone will be above the soil and half will be below.
